Background to my Middle Egyptian Studies.
This page has been set up to list the many resources for the study of Middle Egyptian and some of my experiences in learning it. This list is not comprehensive but just represents the resources I am aware of and have used but if you have any additional information please email me with the details.
An extremely useful resource is the Gylphstudy Yahoo Group with has members from all over the world who are learning Middle Egyptian together. There are three groups :-

The 2005 Group who are just about completing Allen.

The 2007 Group who are currently on Chapter 12 of Allen.

The 2008 Group who are working through Kamrin before moving onto Allen.

For the beginner starting to learn Hieroglyphs then I can thoroughly recommend joining the 2008 Group and most people would be easy to catch up with the group fairly easily and feel free to email me at tattooedwelshman@yahoo.co.uk for more details.

I began my studies in Middle Egyptian with the excellent Gardeners Egyptian Grammar under the excellent direction of Professor Alan B Lloyd. Although Gardeners Grammar is excellent it is not ideal for self study particularly after Chapter 10.

I have never found languages come easily to me so it has taken a great deal of work and motivation to continue but it has been time well spent. My attempt to learn French and German at school was an outstanding disaster and although I can remember some German and just about hold a basic conversation my French is as close to zero as possible.

After Gardener I moved on to Allen and although (in my opinion) there are areas which could be improved it is probably the most comprehensive book written in English on Middle Egyptian. It has a clear and distinct order and is ideal as a tool to learn Middle Egyptian whether as self-study or as part of a group or tutored.
Books on Middle Egyptian.
James P. Allen - Middle Egyptian: An Introduction to the Language and Culture of Hieroglyphs.

This is in my opinion the best English Language tool for learning Hieroglyphs. It slowly introduces different concepts clearly and comprehensively.

R.O Faulkner - Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian.

An essential tool for learning any language is a dictionary and this is probably the best available for the beginner in Middle Egyptian. It is readily available at a reasonable cost and will provide the majority of a students needs until progressing to a higher level.

Janice Kamrin - Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Practical Guide.

Adrian De Buck - Egyptian Reading Book: Exercises and Middle Egyptian Texts
Boyo G. Ockinga - A Concise Grammar Of Middle Egyptian
James Hoch - Middle Egyptian Grammar
Mark Collier and Bill Manley - How To Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide To Teach Yourself Hieroglyphs
David Shennum - English-Egyptian Index Of Faulkner's Concise Dictionary Of Middle Egyptian
Rainer Hannig - Die Sprache der Pharaonen: Grosses Handworterbuch Agytisch-Deutsch Kulturgeschichte der Antiken Welt.
Gertie Englund - Middle Egyptian: An Introduction
Antonio Loprieno - Ancient Egyptian: A Linguistic Approach
Henry George Fischer - Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy: A Beginner's Guide To Writing Hieroglyphs
